Recently i have noticed ALOT of new tracks in various sims have been over looking the most obvious details. Now call me neurotic but this really irritates me. To no end really... lol keeps me awake at night!!!!!!
I took the liberty below to provide photgraphs to back up what im saying here.
Back when Sunoco took over as the official fuel of nascar, and the tracks started putting up the familiar pointy signs, i noticed a trend. The arrow on the sign, except in rare cases, always points towards the infield gas pumps. After talking with a friend of the family a while back, it was explained to me that this is to point the drivers towards the fueling centers at the track. In some rare cases they determined that doing this did not always allow the tv cameras full view of the sunoco text on the sides. As you will see the guidelines for this appear to be that if a sunoco sign is to be placed in ANY other direction other than pointing infield it must be placed OUTside the track, and near another sign that is pointing infield. Examples include Martinsville pre 2008, lowes motorspeedway turn 3-4 area and also atlanta motorspeedway.
Here are as many examples as i could put together.
Atlanta
California
Chicagoland
Daytona
Also at the larger tracks, nascar uses these double signs as lookout spotter stands.
Dover turn 1
Homestead turn 4
Kansas turn 4
Las Vegas
Lowes pit exit
Now at Martinsville they used to have a sunoco sign near pit entry that pointed infield, and then they had the one up on the backstretch hill that pointed towards turn 2, the one on the hill was for the tv cameras.
But this year the one on pit entry is gone and the one on the hill has been turned inwards to meet the requirements
Martinsville turn 4
Michigan
New Hampshire turn 4
Pheonix
Richmond
Talladega
Texas
So, you can plainly see NOT ONE Sunoco sign points towards the outside of the race track, and almost all of them DO point infield towards the sunoco fuel stations inside the tracks. Exactly as it was explained to me by a retired cup official. That is exactly how Sunoco wants their signs to be displayed. I hope this helps clear up the confusion i have been seeing recently.
